A taste of sailing

A days play with the sailing toys, on the biggest lake in England

Next open session 27 August 2020

"there is nothing — absolutely nothing — half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats."
Kenneth Grahame.

A day messing around in boats. No stress, no lesson plan - just good old pure fun.

A whole day - sorted

An ideal holiday day or treat day trip. Stop off for our lovely local produce picnic lunbch (included). Whole days are fantastic value.

Book and turn up this is the easiest and most fun day you have ever arranged.

Totally not scary

No, you don't have to get wet, yes you can volunteer to drive the powerboat if you get nervous. Chris is a very experienced, patient and soft-spoken instructor.

Great for all ages and abilities

We have developed special no duck trimaran sailing canoes and level access powerboat.

We are accessible to those who need supportive seating, are not so nimble anymore, or have any other additional needs.

One of our "Great for Grands" recommended grandparent and grandkids adventures.

Sailing on Windermere

Windermere is a lovely lake running right upto the majesty of the Lake District massive.

With some great places for lunch stops and bays to play in we love sailing on Windermere

Great faciltities

Fell Foot host our sailing base and that means we have access to their fantastic facilities.

Showers, lockers, toilets, cafe and a carpark (free to National Trust members).

They have wheel chair accessible changing and showers, T- loops in the public spaces, level access In the cafe and the park has well surfaced paving around the main areas

A taste of sailing - accessibility info

  • Suitable for all those who can perceive and identify objects 100m away unsupported, or those with a dedicated assistant (talk to us about a volunteer).

  • Controls are laid out on a fixed rack to make them easy to identify.

  • We can coach by radio to help guide and interpret the conditions.

  • Great sailing is as much about the other senses than sight - you can feel, hear and sense the boat's reactions to make adjustments to sail well.

  • We offer dedicated cognitive needs days including sailing on request.

  • Suitable for those able to self manage without dedicated support or who bring a dedicated helper.

  • Participants should be capable of understanding and be able to follow instructions consistently - most sailing safety comes from some core rules. If not, please bring a dedicated helper.

  • All of our boats can accommodate a dedicated helper.

  • The core craft to support mobility needs is the Canoe Trimaran which requires the ability to sit upright without being strapped in - Speak to use about a higher mobility needs dinghy based day for a reclined seating position.

  • To access the Canoe Trimaran, you must have good motion in at least one arm.

  • You do not need to be able to manoeuvre quickly or dash around.
